Wealth Over Health?

Courtesy of Pierre Beteille

I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit overwhelmed with the amount of people nowadays talking about “success” that it’s a bit scary.  Perhaps the thing that concerns me most, is that most of the ones I’ve seen are pretty out of shape and unhealthy.

Sure they might have financial “success” but what about all the other components (family, health, relationships, etc)?

That brought me to something I really wanted to address with you – going back to the basics of “healthy body, healthy mind.”

So here are a few simple unconventional insights to keep your health, despite any wealth you may or may not have.

*De-Internalize yourself.

We internalize so many things, our bodies can only take so much.  Although many doctors wouldn’t stay in business if things were this easy – it’s important to do something like this every day.

A few things I do as I’m going to sleep (or any moment I have free) to “de-internalize” myself:

1 – I force a smile on my face.

2 – Imagine a white light scanning through my body, healing every organ and body part.

3 – Act ridiculous every now and then (you would have to ask my girlfriend Kelly how I do this).

*Be stupid.

Listen… people are going through some tough tough times (I understand – I’ve been there).  But lighten up people – and stop being so serious!

How?

Follow some crazy people on Twitter.  Keep a journal of things that make you laugh – this way anytime you are going through a tough challenge, you can take this out and laugh your ass off.

You can also, go to a comedy club instead of getting hammered (it’s more fun when you’re sober).  Hang around hilarious and light hearted people.  Watch the comedy network. Google, “laugh your ass off.”

*Connect with your surroundings.

My friend Jonathan Mead of Illuminated Mind, had introduced me to a new way of working out getting fit (through connecting with nature).  A few weeks ago, we did this through a hike.

Jonathan brought a set of rings – the ones professional gymnast’s use.  Then a mile up the hill we found a tree, took out some straps to hook the rings onto the tree limb… and we began our work out.

The things I loved the most was that each person we passed on the hike said, “hello” and smiled – which seems to be a foreign thing in the gym (since most don’t like being there).

I also liked that fact that it was free, and were only limited by our own imagination in what we could do.  Not only that, we could get more creative than what the gym provides – working the same exact body parts as we would in the gym (back, biceps, legs, chest, shoulders, triceps).

So listen, I know those are just a few of the endless possibilities to get and stay healthy. Like everything, wealth and health take a lot of hard work and if I had the choice… I would choose health over wealth any day.  But don’t believe me, just ask any sick person – they would know.

    Lovely post Jared

I think many people link success with financial gain because of the way success is seen in society.

But success is different to different people. For some its money, other’s family and relationship, while for other people its about health.

The important thing that we all do when talking about or reading about success is that we decide on what success means to us an individual

    Thanks Ben. Great insight.

I just want people to ponder how important health is to their overall “success.” Some people sacrifice everything to get to a certain place… and I don’t think it’s necessary to do at the expense of our health. You know?

Yeah I know exactly what you mean

Try kite flying. There is nothing more relaxing than getting a beautiful kite up, tieing it off and watching it soar on a beautiful day. There other fun part of it is that everyone that you meet will instantly turn into a child again…asking it they can hold the kite, fly it or in general, play. That is an amazing extra.

Thanks for adding that Celeste… what a great idea! I haven’t flown a kite in years and remember how amazing the experience was.

“Success” has nothing to do with making money. Success has everything to do with meaningful relationships with your wife, husband, significant other, children, family, friends. “Success” is all about feeling and being healthy- physically and mentally. When you have achieved “health” first, the financial success inherently follows. Why? because you feel good about yourself which enables you to communicate effectively with your peers, colleagues, co-workers, etc. In turn, you are given jobs, projects, contracts, opportunities, etc which results in income…or “financial” success.

Thanks for the comment David. So true. Staying/keeping fit has a domino effect like you mentioned and has probably contributed to more people’s “success” than not.

    Hey Tamanna,

Glad you resonate with what I had said. I think it’s important to spice things up a bit and try the “tree game” – as you called it. LOL!
