Tips For Selling Yourself On YOU

It’s not an easy thing to do – sell yourself on you.  However, it’s probably one of the most crucial things you can do.  ESPECIALLY “in times like these.”

Why?

If you’re NOT selling yourself on you, then someone else is selling you on their PLAN for you.  And that my friends, is usually… never a good thing.

Listen… in the short term, you have to do what you have to do to survive.  Yes.  BUT in the long term, you have got to find a way every single day to keep true to who you are. And that takes a consistent amount of selling (on your part).

How?

“Others see their possibility in the reality of you.  Your message is your life lived.” -Neale Donald Walsch

Step 1 – Develop your own affirmation.

An “affirmation” in my opinion, is something you say over and over again that incorporates something to get rid of that voice inside your head that is constantly tearing you down. Whether you say it in the morning, afternoon, or night makes no difference.

However, the more you say it, the more you’ll feel it.

Step 2 – Pat yourself on the back.

I used to be a victim of this.  Never stopping and celebrating.  Never patting myself on the back.  Always moving onto the next thing.

However, it’s vital to look at what you’ve done and accomplished already.  It instills a sort of self love and appreciation for who you are and what you’ve done and only perpetuates more accomplishments to come.

I understand that most people/work environments don’t do this enough and think… “hey you should be lucky to even have a job.”  That isn’t enough.

Step 3 - Focus more on what you want (and less on what you don’t want).

So many things can come in the way of living your life nowadays.  Credit card debt. House payments.  Looking for a job.  Divorce.  Twitter.  Facebook.  Friends. School. Bills.

But never take your eye off the ball.  Each morning you should visualize and bring into your body the feeling of having already attained what you want.

And listen…  I know someone may think, “Oh yeah whatever.”  But seriously, this isn’t a bunch of hokey pokey stuff (this is how I attained AND kept my own physical transformation – as seen in my “about” section).

Of course I did the steps towards achieving and keeping it, but if I didn’t and STILL don’t visualize what I want at least once each day…  I would be SOLD on someone else’s plan. Not my own.

But honestly, this isn’t really about me…  it’s ALL about you.  So give it a try.  See the results.  Then see whose doing the selling.

Hopefully, it’s you (and not someone else).

Very smart. Very right. I know someone who doesn’t know what she wants and this causes her to jump from idea to idea and never really have any success at any of them. Knowing what one wants and keeping self-reafirmation alive are key. You’ve done it. This post will certainly be forwarded to someone who needs it.

Sure think Rayan. Thanks for checking it out. I’m really glad it inspired you with whatever you might be going through.

David… thank YOU too. You know, sometimes we are our own worst enemy and… someone has to shut up those voices inside our head – it might as well be us. :)

I have a bit of a problem with the “Affirmation” topic…

Step 1 – Develop your own affirmation.

An “affirmation” in my opinion, is something you say over and over again that incorporates something to get rid of that voice inside your head that is constantly tearing you down. Whether you say it in the morning, afternoon, or night makes no difference.

This sounds too much like a politicians methodology.. “Say it often enough and you will eventually believe it” … Are you saying that you can change who you are by telling yourself you are someone different? “I am a Nobel Peace Prize Winner… I am a Nobel Peace Prize winner” … How many times will it take for me to say that before it comes true?

Sorry to sound so negative, but, just saying anything doesn’t do it in my mind. And “saying” something about yourself is far slower than “doing” something… If you have a weakness that needs to be corrected, “do” something about it, don’t just talk about it (even to yourself).

Just my humble, been on this earth more than 50 years opinion.

Thanks, Jared, for the thoughts and advice. I worked many years for a firm that seldom passed out praise to their people. I had so little self-worth for so long because of this. It wasn’t until I began doing freelance work that I heard the complements towards my work. As much as I think I can do without the praise, it is a needed thing to know if we’re doing a good job or not.

    Thanks again. -Dave

With all the negativity around us, it is important to have ways to get motivated and back on focus. I find that no matter how my days go, if I have my ‘To Do List’ prepared from the day before I am able to feel accomplished. That’s my ‘pat on the back’ for the day.

    Charlie;

I think Jared could elaborate a bit and encourage something realistic. I had a commercial I wrote on the Super Bowl once (I know, no big deal) and although I didn’t sit around and repeat the phrase ‘I want to be in the Super Bowl one day’, I did reaffirm always that I wanted to be at the top of my craft. I was applying to the top company in my industry when I was probably complete shit and worked at a truly shitty company but I never stopped believing – and eventually I was hired by that company (The famous one). In the meantime I kept taking little steps, that I could accomplish, that when added up, helped me reach a dream. Dream Real. That’s how I say it. And then work like hell to make it happen.

Hey Charlie thanks for your comment. I know what you mean. Sometimes a lot of people like to say, “there are no weeds, there are no weeds, there are no weeds…” We can’t pretend they don’t exist. They do. BUT that doesn’t mean we should listen to them. I think it’s (the “affirmation”) is part of the process (not the end all be all).

Dave A. Sure thing. I’m glad you didn’t let the lack of praise stop you from doing what you KNEW was the right thing to do. You’re AWESOME! I TOO think it’s incredibly important.

Hey Rose. Thanks for stopping by and adding your thoughts too. Great point! I’m glad you have your “to do list” to help you. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. And you know… I never thought of using that as a way to pat yourself on the back. I hope someone picks up that valuable little tidbit. :)

You are so right. Sell yourself on how great and capable and generous and inspiring you are. Also remind yourself of how easily money flows to you in abundance. Affirmations are a key element to seeing it com to fruition.

Great article. As one of my partners always says.. “You need to invest in yourself before you can expect anyone else to invest in you”.
