Maybe It Helps To Waste Some Time?
Time management is everywhere. Get more done in less time is kind of like the credo we’ve established (as I’m also guilty of this).
On the other hand… maybe it’s not such a bad idea to waste some time after all?
What I mean is that, creativity isn’t planned – and a lot of times it can be killed by setting an exact time to do it. Not only that… we beat ourselves up over thinking, “I’ve wasted so much time at _____.”
Have you ever stopped to think, “Maybe you’re not wasting any time? Maybe your actually saving some?”
As I’m taking on more Copywriting clients I’ve recently been dealing a lot with this. Just the other day, I caught myself a few times in saying, “Ugh… you’re wasting time – you need to get back to work.” But maybe we shouldn’t beat ourselves up over this (as much as we do)?
I used to see this everywhere in “Corporate America” – they get you to feel bad for taking longer breaks, leaving early, going on vacation… because to them, it appears as if you’re wasting time.
But what if you’re running (or thinking about running) your own business? Do you want a business run on this same fear based motivation that’s being perpetuated in the workplace everywhere you turn?
The fact of the matter is, unplanned brilliance happens a lot of times when it APPEARS to others as if you’re “wasting time.” And can’t that save a ton of time – if you know when to catch it? And when not to?
Strategically placing pads of paper all over my living quarters, I’ve gotten some of my best ideas through wasting a ton of time (as conventional individuals and businesses might say).
So the next time it appears that you’re wasting time and someone is giving you the evil eye because you don’t appear as busy as you should be… don’t beat yourself up. Maybe the only “waste of time” is what you’re doing (or where you’re working).
