Proud Or Embarrassed?

It’s something I think we’ve all dealt with at one time or another.  So embarrassed by something we’ve done or shared, that we hide our heads in shame (barely wanting to tell anyone about it).

On the other hand, we’re sometimes incredibly proud to represent something that shows who we really are. Something we’d love nothing more than to tell the world about what we have. What we’ve done.  And feel nothing better than to boast out loud to everyone we know (and don’t know), about how great things are going in our life.

I’ve recently experienced that with the first live workshop I’ve put on.  As seen here on my Facebook Page – it seemed to go pretty well.  In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. And people said some amazing things, that made me feel really proud to pull something like this together so quickly (and at the same time, accurately represented me and my business).

I guess what I’m trying to say here, is that you should be proud of what you do.  Proud that at some level you feel like you’re making a difference for someone.

But the weird thing is, I don’t see it much these days. In fact, most people I know come up to me and say, “Man I’d love your help, but go easy on me.  Ok?  The copy on my website is pretty bad and…”  I’m thinking to myself, “How can you make any kind of money with your business with how embarrassed you are over it? Embarrassed that it doesn’t accurately represent who you are and what your business is about?”

Because at some level we’ll all just have to say, “screw it!” Taking some sort of action on how some might perceive us and our business. And go about taking the necessary action to do something to change how others view us and our business – just from what they read on our site.

At least for me, no one should EVER hide their head in shame from what it is they do! Stand proud.

QUESTION: Do you love your business, but know you shouldn’t be the one writing for it?  Or perhaps you may even feel you could ruin the reputation you’ve spent so long in building?  Heck… maybe you’re just way too embarrassed to even share it with anyone because you know deep down inside that whatever you write, doesn’t accurately represent who you are (and what your business is about)?

Why Are Simple Solutions Necessary?

For a really long time we’ve tried to take on everything ourselves.  As a matter of fact, we’ve gotten to the point where a lot of things in our business can really suffer because of it.

From bringing in new clients.  To servicing current ones.  To trying to attend as many networking events that we can fit into our week, it can sometimes be a LOT more time consuming than ever expected.

And I don’t know about you… I’d wish there were an easy way to do things. An easier way than trying to control every little thing about our business (even if it’s driving it into the ground).  Because the fact of the matter is… we all aren’t the best at doing every little thing that surrounds it. In fact it can do more harm than good.

As one person said, “You can sound like an idiot” when writing for your business and… if you have a pretty high priced product or service… you could’ve just lost a few hundred to a few hundred THOUSAND dollars (from taking things into your own hands).

And I don’t know about you, that’s just not a smart thing to do.

So… yes.  Simple solutions aren’t only necessary.  They’re vital!

Vital to helping the often times complex problems that arise from not taking the time to say; “Ok… it’s just better if I pay someone else to do this – because quite honestly, I’d rather spend my time on the things that matter to me and my business the most.”

So welcome to the world of simple solutions!  Now all we need is the willingness to notice them, when they magically start appearing right before our eyes.

Is It Ever “The Right Time?”

When I did the “Go Renegade Or Go Broke Telesummit” with my good friend Matthew, it just wasn’t the right time.

I was literally in the middle of a move.  I took on some new clients.  My girlfriend was in the middle of moving up here.  And we were still trying to figure out exactly where we wanted to move (not to mention the fact that I didn’t know the first thing about doing a “Telesummit,” didn’t know how much time it would take and)…

We still set the date and did it anyway.

A few months ago I decided to work with a mastermind group that’s a year long program and a few thousand dollars to be a part of.  The funny thing was, it wasn’t the right time either. It was when I needed the extra cash to put a deposit on the new place. To use as an extra cushion “just incase things didn’t work out” as I continue to build AND live a 100% debt free business and life and…

We did it anyway.

When I heard about all the crazy shit of starting a business “in the worst time” (let alone starting it without any big income or debt)… I also felt like “it’s wasn’t the right time.”

We did it anyway.

Should we get the chance to talk over the phone and possibly work on a copywriting project together, can I just say that if you’re “waiting for the right time…”

There isn’t one, so do it anyway.

Short And Sweet

I was watching “Fringe” the other night with my girlfriend on my laptop and…

I know.  I know.  You’re probably thinking, “How romantic.”  LOL!  Ok.  So we’re not going to go there.

However, during the break I saw this car commercial that floored me – and thought it would be important to share with other businesses.  But not just another commercial, one that illustrates how effective “short and sweet” can be?”

I’d also be curious to see who else saw this commercial – and what you thought of it.

So listen…

Do you remember those old school 100 foot tall air filled streamers they sometimes stick in car lots (for the life of me I can’t think of what it’s called – but I’m sure someone has a name for it).  Anyways, the commercial starts off where you feel as if you’re riding in the car and suddenly become overtaken by an immensely oversized inflatable fabric dummy towering over you when suddenly…

A voice comes on to ask us, “Are car makers still trying to get your attention or are they just trying to distract you?”

Then it flashes a date… and shows their web site compactconspiracy.com.  Now I know it’s not exactly how it happened, but here’s what I love about being short and sweet with your copy:

  • It can still cause people to take action (as I did).
  • It can still tell the truth.
  • It can still make fun of the competition (and get it’s point across).
  • It can still intrigue you enough to want to know more.

Can Others Really Steal Our Business?

It’s scary when you think about it.  But people are stealing business from us every single day we sit there and do nothing about it.  Here’s why.

There’s probably a few hundred to a few hundred THOUSAND people that do what we do. And the thing is… we sit around thinking we’re going to do something to change it, and the weeks turn to months. The months turn to years.  And we’re still working as hard if not HARDER than when we first started our business and to say the least…

We’re exhausted.  Frustrated.  And just at a loss as to why that is.

For example; I had this one lady pay an individual that calls themselves a copywriter, and she’s pretty much embarrassed to tell anyone about her site now (because they really weren’t one).  The thing is, it’s almost weeks later and you hear the same ridiculous excuse I’ve heard before:

I work off of referrals.

Well here’s the deal. Do you know why some businesses ONLY work off of referrals?

Because they’re trying to go to Pic-N-Save finding the best deal out there and now that they got the best deal in town from someone who doesn’t do the level of work you and I do NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WILL USE THEIR PRODUCT OR SERVICE BECAUSE THEIR WEB SITE LOOKS AND READS LIKE CRAP so…

The competition wins every time!

They win because they’re willing to do something about the screw ups they made today. They win because if they don’t, they lose business every single day they don’t spend the money for quality work that has people go to their site and read in a way that get’s others excited about working with them.

So we need to do ourselves a favor and… get our shit in gear!

Stop letting people steal business right from under your eyes! And if you ONLY work off of referrals and generate no new business because of how your web site reads… what happens when your referrals run out?

By the time that happens, it’s too late!  And not only has someone else stolen your hard earned business right from underneath you, you’ve stolen from yourself the ability to live up to your full potential.

Isn’t it about time to change that?

QUESTION: Do you love your business, but know you shouldn’t be the one writing for it?  Or perhaps you may even feel you could ruin the reputation you’ve spent so long in building?  Heck… maybe you’re just way too embarrassed to even share it with anyone because you know deep down inside that whatever you write, doesn’t accurately represent who you are and what your business is really about.
