11 New Things To Try

As you’re probably aware I definitely like to try new things.  Always in tune with how you and your business seem to play a vital co-existing role in your life… I thought I would share a few things I’m trying out.

1 – Try eating for your blood type.

Although I’m not a doctor and a lot of people are against things like this, I just discovered a new interesting idea that makes sense.  Always being interested in my health, I learned that having an “A Positive” blood type is something important to know in giving my body what it needs.

Because I very much believe in the “mind/body” connection… there is no doubt I’ve learned a lot to eating for how my body is made – although I’ve been doing much of what it said for me already.

2 – Eat slower.

Since discovering my blood type, I’ve realized that it’s important to digest my food real good.  Because I like good, quick, healthy meals… I’ve been known to just inhale my food (not really enjoying it much).

Having been conscious of this the past few days, I’ve noticed that it’s important to slow down the speed in which I’ve been eating.

3 – Go BPA Free.

Because I drink a lot of water, and eat quick/healthy meals…  until recently, I never realized the crazy effects BPA could have on someone.

Recently hearing some scary things about this chemical found in water bottles, what you heat up your leftovers in, canned foods, etc…  I’ve recently been using a BPA free water bottle and eliminating the products that contains this.

4 – Try getting a new pair of glasses.

I’m always amazed at how a different pair of glasses can change your whole entire look.  Although people think you need to spend a ton of money to get cool, quality glasses… the fact of the matter is, they can put any type of lenses in most glasses.

I bought mine for $15 at the kiyosk in the mall (and just recently had my prescription put in them).

5 – Eliminate Tuna.

I’ve been a Pescatarian for about 15 years now – mostly eating fish as a source of protein.  However, because of the recent risk I’ve heard about mercury poisoning found in a lot of tuna (no matter the kind/amount eating) I’ve been able to completely eliminate it from my meals.

6 – Work out in nature.

My friend Jonathan Mead has carved out a really unique twist on getting in shape and connecting with nature. It‘s something I would personally like to get involved more – after going on a hike with him and see how important it is to do.

It sounds so simple and just the right thing to do… doesn’t it?

7 – Try Greek Yogurt.

Because I’ve eliminated tuna… I found another source of healthy protein. Greek yogurt.

Not only that, since it’s not as flavorful as regular yogurt… I’ve been putting sliced apples in it.

It’s AMAZING!

8 – Discover new music.

My new little discovery has been Pandora. In simple terms, all you do is type in your favorite band, and it plays songs from varying artists similar to that band.  Very few commercials, no annoying dj’s and I’ve discovered a ton of new music I would of never heard of (for free).

Not only that… I find it completely inspiring to hear something from someone that I’ve never heard before – as I hope you will.

9 – Eliminate the worst in you.

I had a great conversation with my friend Brian the other day.  He recently left a band and as many of you know… I’m moving out of an area of California that I’m not at all happy about living.

He talked about how the guys in his band brought out the worst in him and…  I could totally relate.  If you don’t like what your job, where you live, or who you’re around is rubbing off on you…  you MUST change that.

Although I believe we must change and adapt as best we can to the circumstance, we are all human.  Be around people, places and situation that bring out the best in you.  If you don’t like who you’re becoming, it’s time to look at the other alternatives that exist.

10 – Prepare for the times.

I recently read in the Wall Street Journal about people going solo more – in response to what is happening in the marketplace.

They went on to talk about how they are prepare for this in the down times UNTIL things get better.  The thing is, they aren’t doing too well doing it this way.  Those that embrace this change, and convert the extra bedroom to the office… and really commit to this new type of employment seem to do much better.

11 – Fight against fatigue.

When you work at a job you disklike… the biggest way to fight against it would be to quit.  Easy enough.  Right?

However until that happens and you find alternate ways of living the dream, there are some great ways to give yourself more energy? Dr. Oz has some amazing tips.

So there you have it.  These are all the new things I’ve been trying out recently – and love the results I’ve been getting.  Anything else you want to ad?

Great list Jared – thanks for sharing.

9 and 11 are big ones for me and ones that I try to work on as much as I can.

    Thanks Ben.

You know, sometimes it’s just a little shift or something we read that says, “Oh… that makes sense.” I’m glad you’re working on things as best as you can. You know, sometimes that is all we can do.

Very good list. I’m also testing the waters of the Blood Type Diet. Funny that we are both A postive. :-D

I’ll have to think more about #9 in light of the different areas of my life.

    Hey Jared!

very Zenlike list. Powerful stuff though. If more folks were as ‘thoughtful’ about the changes they want to make in their lives (as opposed to ” I need to go to the gym more”, et.) the world really would be a much better place.

Love the listen to more music suggestion. Checkout anything from the ‘Putamayo’ label – you won’t be disappointed.

    Cheers!

Hey Carrie… thanks so much for your comment and make sure to check out that link regarding Blood Type Diet. The funny thing is, before I even knew about it, I was already eating that way. The only thing was, as I also realized… I was inhaling my food. With our blood type, since we need to focus more on digestion – according to what I read, it’s so important to properly chew our food. Sounds simple I know – but it seems to make sense to me. Number 9 can be a difficult thing for a TON of people – I know. But I also think it’s important to embrace change instead of fighting against it. You know?

Thanks Don for your comment. I think it’s a powerful list too. I agree some people have such a negative image of the gym and working out… that it’s important to really find what is fun for you and also be willing to adapt and keep trying to find something that works on a regular basis for you.

I’m familiar with that label Putamayo (and agree they have some great eclectic music on their albums). If you find an artist on that label you like, you can probably create a list through Pandora.com and it will pull up and play all similar music to that. Great stuff Don. Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE new things! great list :~D i’m going to check out Pandora. i am a musician so this will be a great resource. i just made drummerworld.com my homepage which was a new thing i did this week, in the spirit of what you have written here, and the thing is this, i would get online and msn.com would show up with (bad)news and junk that i don’t want as a staple in my mental diet, so now i have drummerworld.com so instead, i check in and watch a video of some groove i want to learn, i get totally inspired, and my day is off to a good start- plus, i am practising more because i am inspired and have new stuff to work on. one small change. haha!

Thanks Maria for your comment… and what a great simple idea of changing your homepage to something more interesting than the typical bad news for the day. You’re the first person I ever heard say something like that. Great stuff!

Enjoy your column, and particularly like this list. Just the concept (that we can (should?) change things that are negatively impacting us) is freeing. How many times are we told to “make the best of things”, instead of brainstorming how we can affect changes for the better.
My husband and I are brainstorming ways to free him to retire in 1.5 years, at 62. We do not want to stay in the Northeast, so we are looking at other areas and pondering ways to bring in income from home. Thanks for the ispiration!!

Thanks Trece. Always great connecting with people on a similar path (as my girlfriend and I are moving out of California to do similar things). Brainstorming ways to have your husband retire at 62 sounds AMAZING – so good for you in finding ways in how to do that.
